How do
I reply to an advert that interests me?
The first thing to remember is that a response to an ad is a kind of advertisement in its own right. You need to say hi, and say that you saw the personal ad and thought it was interesting. A good idea is to say what you found interesting about it. Then you'd be wise to tell a little about yourself, to make you sound interesting enough to respond to. It's all a matter of putting your best foot forward.
The main thing is to remember not to be bashful; after all, you are responding to someone who has posted an ad. You therefore already know that this person is looking for email responses. You've certainly got nothing to be embarrassed about.
Where
should we meet on a first date?
Choose a safe, neutral spot for your first date, just sitting down over coffee, or perhaps a light lunch at a casual restaurant. Emphasize that your first meeting will be for just that: meeting. Don't expect much more than that you'll sit down, get used to what the other person looks like, maybe have a bite to eat, then go home. Don't invite your date to your home or give out your address until you are absolutely sure they are genuine.
Is
it safe to date someone I met on the Internet?
Yes - in fact if you use a reputable
web site it is probably the safest way of meeting anybody. Make sure
the site lets you talk to new people without giving away your personal
information first - they should allow "anonymous" messages
between people.
Are
there any other safety tips I should be aware of?
For added safety, we suggest you use
these guidelines:
1. Never give out your home
address, e-mail address or telephone number to a stranger.
2. Always arrange to meet in a
very public place, i.e. a pub or restaurant. Never invite a stranger
to your home.
3. Always tell someone else
where you are going, and when you expect to be back.
4. Above all, use your common
sense. If you are unsure about meeting someone then don't - your
instincts are usually right.
Can I
talk to them over the phone before I meet them?
It is probably wise to, as this will
give you more clues about the person's character before meeting them. Do
not give them your home phone number though - use a mobile number for
added safety, or arrange the call from a phone box. |
